MARLBOROUGH

The Future for Wairau Valley Township and Renwick?
Planning which will direct the future growth of the satellite town of Renwick and the rural township of Wairau Valley is set out in the Southern Marlborough Urban Growth Strategy.

Public feedback on the ideas in this Strategy is being sought by the Council now.
Planners suggest that space will be needed for almost two hundred new houses in Renwick in the next two decades and that this housing expansion should be on the western side of the town, with two large blocks to the north identified as suitable for rural-residential development.

A comprehensive upgrade for High Street and Havelock Street is recommended, with trees and improved landscaping, and more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Priority is also given to roading improvements at Pak Lims Corner and where Gee Street and Boyce Street intersect with State Highway 6.

The planners suggest future residential development at the Wairau Valley township should be on the northern side of State Highway 63. Clearer definition of the township area for the highway traffic plus design ideas to make it safer for pedestrians within the township area are also outlined.

A full summary of the strategy is available on the Council’s website or from the Library or Council office. The summary contains a submissions form which may be emailed to growing@marlborough.govt.nz or posted to PO Box 443, Blenheim 7240.

Hearings will be scheduled in early July for those wishing to make a personal submission.
