The Mico / All About Plumbing Cycling team presented by Revolution Racing has just finished its last race of the summer season as we head into the winter break. The team was just one of many at the 3 day Powerco Queen’s birthday Tour of Taranaki at the weekend. With cold, wet, winter conditions Lee Evans went in to the race with strong hopes of a top performance.

What Lee came home with back to Wellington was a huge smile and praise from many. At just 20 years old Lee Evans achieved the polka dot Jersey awarded for hill points or “King of the mountain” as well as 3rd place overall and two stage podiums over the 3 days of racing. Fact is he only finished once outside the top five in all 5 stages.

Team co-manager Steve Elden was impressed that Lee, who is a known sprinter and normally struggles and protests the climbs was up and fighting for the hill points. “Lee is one of our development riders we are guiding and backing to step up with our team plan for next year and every race day this guy just impresses me more and more”. Over the weekend he impressed some of the more experienced and seasoned riders in the peloton too. This is why we are supporting and funding the young guys and to see Lee standing on the final podium, fighting out the stage wins and winning the polka dot Jersey is something the whole team and our family of sponsors is proud to stand behind and see”.

Team mate Josh Brown was on hand to help and setup Lee in the first day of racing but the weather affected his chest infection so under advice to avoid further sickness withdrew to the warmth to recover. Mico / All About Plumbing U19 rider Louis Wright was also in the race but was riding under the instructions and guidance of the Bike NZ U19 development team as they prepare for Canada later next month.

Lee said after the tour that “After three days of nervously trying to hold top GC positions and a jersey, I'm glad the tour is finally over. After getting 5th in the time trial I thought I might have been able to get a top 5 or at least a top 10. I never thought I would be battling with Gordy (Gordon McCauley), Coop (Joe Cooper)and (Elliot) Crowther for a podium finish and the King of the Mountains! There were no time bonuses in the tour so my consistent good stage results didn't mean too much as the top three finished with almost the same times after the chrono (Stage 1 Time trial). The last stage was the queen stage which was a worry for me getting up them climbs, but it ended up finishing in a bunch sprint where Alex Ray was too quick for me after three days of racing”.

Lee will now have a few days rest before continuing to train for his next goal which is the Tour of Tahiti later next month. Lee steps up to the Bike NZ team for the Tahiti tour with fellow team mate Dan Waluszewski and under the guidance from experienced rider and Mico / All About Plumbing manager Steve Elden. Lee Evans is defiantly a rider to watch in the future....
