In what is perfect timing to herald today’s start of the 2010 FIFA World Cup, Monteith’s Golden Lager has taken out the top title in the Beer World Cup organised by City AM, London’s daily business newspaper.

The Beer World Cup pitted a beer from each country participating in the FIFA World Cup against each other until the winner was found. It followed the same format as the FIFA World Cup – group stages, top 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals and the final – with each of the 32 participating countries represented.

The competition was, in the words of City AM, “...an attempt to sort the Brazils of beverage making from the Liechtensteins of lager...until there was only one left that deserved to be crowned the greatest.”

And, fortunately for New Zealand, that was our country’s representative beer – Monteith’s Golden Lager.

Beating some big names like Guinness, Asahi, Little creatures Pale Ale, London Porter and Grolsch; just to name a few, Monteith’s Golden Lager triumphed over them all to take out the 2010 Beer World Cup, despite being a rank outsider.

The final was, in many ways, a Bavarian Affair with Monteith’s being a blend of Munich style amber malts and its rival, Schneider Weissee, being German in name and nature. New Zealand won thanks to Golden Lager’s “...combination of smooth malt and light, amber nuttiness.”

Because of its blend attributes, Monteith’s Golden Lager pairs wonderfully with subtle flavours like those of fish and chicken. It also matches well with salmon and creamy cheeses like camembert and brie – cutting through the oliness of the flavours and cleansing the palate. If you’re looking for a contrast, Monteith’s Golden Lager counterbalances the spiciness of a curry.

Monteith’s brewer, Doug Banks, comments, “We are delighted with our win at the Beer World Cup. Monteith’s Golden Lager is a great beer and we are pleased to see it gaining recognition in the world stage.”

In England, Monteith’s Golden Lager is available via www.sanza.co.uk and in New Zealand it is available at all good supermarkets, liquor stores and selected bars.

Monteith’s Golden Lager is part of Monteith’s extensive range of seven beers. Monteith’s also has a range of four seasonal beers and one apple cider. For information on the Monteith’s range, please visit www.monteiths.co.nz
