Rugby fans joined in a rousing rendition of Stand By Me in the first match of the Steinlager Series between New Zealand and Ireland.

Professional singers, dotted throughout the crowd, kicked off the tune as a way to show the crowd’s support for the All Blacks and Steinlager’s 24-year sponsorship of the All Blacks, during their first match of the Steinlager Series.

Todd Gordon, Marketing Manager of Steinlager, says the song, which was a hit when it was originally used in a Steinlager and All Blacks campaign in the late 80s and early 90s, captures the mood of the nation in the build-up to the 2011 Rugby World Cup.

“We picked this song because it unites Kiwis in their support for the All Blacks during the Steinlager Series,” Gordon says.

“We want to lead by example and show the players and the team our support is unconditional and solid. We also want the fans to show their support for the team and what better way than with a classic song that everyone knows and loves.”

One spectator at the game said it created a spine tingling atmosphere. “Waiting for an All Black’s match is always exciting, but this added another dimension. It was a fantastic way to start the game.”

The All Blacks face Wales in Dunedin next week in what will be the last game in the old Carisbrook Stadium.
