WORK is progressing steadily on the $1.2 million reconstruction project in Denbigh Street, Feilding, and indications are that it will be completed on schedule even though challenging winter conditions have now arrived.

Stage 1 of the major upgrade involves a 700-metre stretch of Denbigh Street from East Street to Kimbolton Road, an area that was in poor surface condition with numerous service trenches and lids contributing to rapid deterioration and an uneven ride.

Projects Engineer, Bryce Clifford, said contractors Downer Edi Works were now 30 percent of their way through the installation of the main trunk sewer line after completing work on the new stormwater main.

The trunk sewer will cater for growth in the north-eastern part of Feilding as the existing connection was determined to be under capacity for future growth.

“We’ve had a few wet days causing some delays but that’s par for the course on projects of this type,” said Mr Clifford. “We want to get it done and dusted as quickly as possible and it appears at this stage that we will finish on time in late November-mid December.”

He said as the contractors continued down the street installing the pipe work, another crew may start on preparations for street lighting and telecom cabling. It would also remove the existing pavement material and lower the road’s crown to a new design level.

New kerb and channelling, driveway crossings and footpaths would also be constructed while the existing grass verges are to be reinstated to a similar width, but with a new inter-locking, plastic mesh material suitable for grass growth and car parking.

Mr Clifford said there had been good co-operation between street residents and the contractors during the project, with few disruptions regarding vehicle access to private properties.
