HASTINGS

Not only did Flaxmere’s MAC beat Tamatea on the paddock on Saturday, but more than 1000 Flaxmere residents had their say on the future of their village at the Passport to Flaxmere’s Future: Community Fair.

The fair was an opportunity for residents to have their say on four major projects being developed in Flaxmere; the review of the Community Plan, the Flaxmere Park Reserve Management Plan, the Town Centre Upgrade and the Paharakeke identity project.

Community groups, Flaxmere College students, Councillors, Council staff, and Flava radio DJ Pete the Palagi opened the doors to the Flaxmere College hall to a steady flow of locals from 10am and residents were three-deep at consultation stands all day wanting to give their views.

K-Mart and Bike On Trust supplied prizes which were drawn by Pete the Palagi, Flaxmere Community Committee chair Kayren Hatherill and Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule.

“I was inspiring to see how many residents were genuinely interested in all the positive things happening in their suburb and that they want to be part of that,” Mayor Yule says.

“This truly was a community event. Whanau’s were coming together to celebrate their community, pitching in to help, giving their honest views of what should happen in Flaxmere – they weren’t afraid to tell us what they need to make Flaxmere even better.

“This has been one of the most successful consultation events for Hastings District Council in recent history – it proves working with the community gets the best results for the community.

More than 200 people entered the Passport to Flaxmere competition and to do that they had to make a submission at each of the four consultation stalls – almost 900 suggestions were made on what Council can do in the suburb.

K-Mart prizes were a BBQ, a Manchester set, an i-pod, two children’s bikes, appliances and a $150 clothing voucher and Bike On Trust supplied a folding bike.

Winners were: Marjorie Thompson, Susan Tenahu, Millie-May Kenrick, Patricia Te, Natasha McLean, Hone Waenga, Hareata Taite-Warbrick.

A children’s colouring competition will be drawn at the end of this week, with results published in Hawke’s Bay Today’s Community Link on Saturday. Ha
