Friday’s interschool rugby match between Waitaki Boys’ High School and St Kevin’s College will be an alcohol free event.

The Waitaki District Council is working with Police, Schools and the North Otago Rugby Union to change a negative culture around alcohol consumption. This annual interschool game is already highly charged without adding alcohol to the mix.

There is no reason why enjoyment of sport, and alcohol need to go hand in hand; here we have an opportunity to prove that.

Police and the Waitaki Guardians will be attending the event. People who are caught drinking or possessing alcohol within the grounds need to know that they may be removed.

Waitaki is a proactive community and this is just another measure to change a negative culture around alcohol. The Waitaki Guardians have been a hugely successful initiative.

Last year Council, Police and local schools invited Norm Hewitt to present “Changing the Alcohol Culture” our community our problem.

Earlier this year Council again joined with Police and the Athletic Marist premier team to enter the Respecting Waitaki contract. By entering the contract players committed to responsible consumption of alcohol and avoiding drink driving. The club committed to providing a safe environment and a way home.

These initiatives work to create a positive culture without alcohol, and have been recognised and commended not only nationally but internationally.

Constable Ross Lory – Oamaru Police
“The Police work in close partnership with Waitaki District Council, Schools and NORFU in making this a successful day. It is a great opportunity for the local schools to showpiece themselves in the wider community. We all aim to create a safe environment where all people can enjoy the day; it is one of Oamaru's busiest days. There have been no issues in the past and the Police will be in attendance at the game and during the evening.”

Alison Banks – Waitaki Community Safety Officer
“This is a day steeped in tradition and friendly rivalry, and this small action won’t change that. It is simply a measure to ensure that the day is for everyone to enjoy, free of trouble. I look forward to attending myself and seeing the town come together in the same way we do every year.”
