Subway – Avanti cycling team primed for Benchmark race
A tough tour in China last month means The Subway - Avanti Pro Cycling team is well primed for this Sunday’s fourth round of the Benchmark Homes series in Canterbury.
After a testing Tour de Qinghai Lake in China New Zealand’s only UCI registered cycling team has high expectations of performing well on Sunday's 140 kilometre course that features five sections and over eight kilometres of unsealed gravel roads.
“The gravel offers a different set of challenges,” Subway – Avanti Pro Cycling team Co-owner Hayden Godfrey said.
“But after hard racing at altitude in China in some tough and varied conditions, the boys should be in good form so long as they have recovered sufficiently, so we have high expectations of a good result.”
The Subway – Avanti team has not won a Benchmark race this year, something they are keen to change on Sunday.
“We have a good line up fronting this weekend and the team and Matt (Gorter) are all placed within striking distance of the top of the points table.”
After spending most of the year in the United States, James Williamson is having his first race back in New Zealand after his second placing in the under 23 elite New Zealand championships in January.
Williamson is joined by Drower, Ryan Wills, Nick Lovegrove and Joe Cooper in the Subway – Avanti line up for Sunday.
