Whakatane District Council has closed the playground, public toilets, reserve and walkway at the Whakatane Heads as a precautionary measure as engineering investigations into the stability of the escarpment continues.

Parking areas in the immediate vicinity will also be closed. The public is advised to keep well clear of this area while the warning notices are in place.

These measures are being taken as a precaution due to a high risk of a landslip occurring in the area. The Council on Wednesday 18 August 2010 advised affected property owners and residents in the area of the potential threat of landslip and issued dangerous building notices which required the affected property owners to vacate their homes.

The Council’s Chief Executive Diane Turner says engineers are still assessing the situation and are looking at options to for dealing with the landslip risk.

“Geotechnical engineers are continuing with their investigations and we hope by the end of the week we will have a clear picture of what may happen and the options for the affected property owners’.

She said the Council will be working closely with various agencies and will also endeavour to keep property owners, residents and the community update
