New burial areas in Manukau
Residents of Manukau and the wider Auckland region will have access to more burial areas with the opening of a new $3 million bridge and supporting roads project at Manukau Memorial Gardens on Tuesday, 7 September.
To meet the needs of the diverse cultures of the community the new area will have a traditional lawn cemetery, a granite ledger area replacing the decorated areas popular with the Pacific community, an area for the Asian community and a babies and children’s area.
The steel-arch bridge designed by Aurecon and constructed by Downer EDI Limited, spans the Waokauri Creek to link the eastern and western sections of the cemetery.
The project extends the capacity of burial sites at Manukau Memorial Gardens by an estimated 25 years.
