Southland District Council has approved excavation work to renew the sewerage rising main from the Mokonui Street Pump Station to Milford Crescent in Te Anau.

Engineering Officer Keith Melchiors said the pump station is crucial as it serves as the central point for all the other pump stations in the area and with the township growing increased demands are being put upon it.

“This project is an essential exercise in risk management and we wish to move ahead with it as quickly as possible to be ready for the anticipated increased demand at summer time”, he said.

The section of rising main being renewed has failed previously and this work should minimise the risk of this happening again.

He said that the total project price was 92,146.72 excluding GST and the contract was awarded to Te Anau Earthworks and Excavating and approved by Council at its meeting last week in Invercargill.

Keith Melchiors said work has started and most of the pipe has been laid, with work scheduled for completion in early October.
