When the community heard that Council staff were off to help in Canterbury, donations just rolled in. Community Safety Officer Alison Banks was contacted by Westpac who had donations from staff and customers and Northside New World who provided a pallet of donations.

Donations included non-perishable food items, baking and pet supplies. The donations have been passed on to the Elsmere Food-bank and have been distributed in the Selwyn District around Rolleston and Darfield.

Community Safety Officer Alison Banks said “it is heart warming to see our community, that so often comes together, coming together to support our neighbours.”

The food and other supplies have been very well received in Canterbury. According to Ms Banks “Many people in the area have lost the contents of their fridges and freezers and stress levels have been increasing.”

The Donations of food have been also been distributed to Schools and Woman’s Refuge.

Locally, Council staff and Civil Defence Volunteers collected funds on Friday for Quake Victims, the collection raised almost $1,000 for the cause.
