MANUKAU CITY

Four of our city’s prominent entrepreneurs were inducted into the Manukau Business Hall of Fame at the 2010 Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards Gala Dinner on 17 September. These inductees are John Delugar, partner at Brookfields Lawyers for his tireless campaigning for Counties Manukau; Tony Timpson for his long-standing history with Cavalier Bremworth Ltd; and husband and wife team, Andrew and Alison Turner for founding Nautech Electronics Limited.

John Delugar has been managing the Manukau office of Brookfields Lawyers for more than 20 years. The practice manages commercial transactions for local businesses, charitable trusts and local authorities. Private clients also receive advice on property and personal legal matters.

What sets John apart is his tireless campaigning for the Manukau region, as he has provided pro bono advice for about a dozen charitable trusts. John has also provided pro bono legal services for Habitat for Humanity. He has been involved with this organisation for more than 15 years, and the advice and time he has given is worth probably hundreds of thousands of dollars.

Cavalier Carpets of New Zealand was founded in 1972 by Tony Timpson and Grant Biel; and in 1988 they bought Bremworth Carpet Company in Papatoetoe. In 1991 the combined companies relaunched under the Cavalier Bremworth brand.

Since then, Cavalier Bremworth has gone on to establish a number of firsts. The most significant achievement is being the first carpet company in the world to gain an internationally recognised eco-label across its entire wool carpet range. Environmental Choice NZ accreditation was awarded in 2006 and shortly followed by equivalent accreditation in Australia. Cavalier Bremworth also has other certification demonstrating a commitment to take responsibility for its manufacturing footprint.

Started in 1989 by Andrew Turner and Alison Turner, Nautech Electronics Ltd was primarily involved in marine electronics as well as sales, installation and service of vehicle security and cellular products.

The company now has divisions in contract manufacturing, emergency warning products and vehicle installation. Solutions are offered for both local and international customers. A close relationship has also been developed over the past ten years between Nautech, New Zealand Police and other emergency services, resulting in the design and development of a wide range of emergency warning products. The company also supplies the NZ Military with a range of innovative products.

The Hall of Fame recognises the loyalty and commitment of those who have made a difference to the Manukau region over the years.

Manukau City Council Mayor Len Brown says he is please to induct John Delugar, Tony Timpson, Andrew Turner and Alison Turner to the Manukau Business Hall of Fame.

“These inductees have all made their mark on the Manukau community; and each in their own way. Be it through voluntary work; building a reputation for quality; or giving the country’s military and emergency services an edge. They have made a difference in Manukau and beyond, and I am delighted to acknowledge and honour their contributions."

Sponsors of the Westpac Manukau Business Excellence Awards include the Wiri Licensing Trust, New Zealand Herald, Brookfields Lawyers, EMA, NALCO, COGITA, RSM Prince, Manukau Water, TelstraClear Pacific Events Centre, ACC and the Auckland Communities Foundation Manukau Fund. Manukau City Council and Westpac are the major sponsors of these awards, which are delivered on behalf of the council by Enterprising Manukau. These Awards were instigated 18 years ago to recognise, encourage and assist business growth and development.
