Council is inviting public submissions on the Draft Solid Waste By-Law 2010.

The By-Law proposing to ban dumping domestic waste in Council litter bins. The By-Law will establish around kerbside collections by private contractors. The rules are designed to minimise disruption to Waitaki residents.

Council Solid Waste Officer Gerry O’Neill said “It is unfair that a small number of people are using public litter bins to dispose of domestic or business waste. The proposed bylaw will allow Council to prosecute offenders through the court system. The proposed bylaw also makes it an offence for waste placed at kerbside to cause nuisance.”

Council resolved to open the by-law to public consultation at their meeting on Wednesday 22 September. Submissions close on Friday 29 October. Council will hold Public Hearings will be held on Wednesday 10 November 2010.

If you wish to submit you can do so through the Council website, or by writing to Council. The full proposal and Draft By-Law can be viewed on the Council website, Council Customer Services or at District Libraries.
