Coronet Peak is to extend its opening dates to allow for an extra week of skiing and riding, as long as the conditions allow.

The popular Queenstown ski area was scheduled to close on Sunday (October 3) but ‘phenomenal’ snow conditions have prompted a rethink and it is now likely to stay open until Sunday October 10.

Coronet Peak Ski Area Manager Hamish McCrostie said the conditions were fantastic.

“It’s just phenomenal on the mountain – spring skiing at its best. People really do want us to keep the mountain open as long as possible so they can make the most of the conditions. We’re able to do that and will stay open the extra week subject to weather and snow conditions.”

Across the valley, The Remarkables too is enjoying amazing spring conditions following the unprecedented snowfalls of the last week.

Ski Area Manager Ross Lawrence said people were loving the sun and powder on offer in the three north facing bowls high in The Remarkables mountain range.

“We’ve got a snow depth of 1.5 metres at the base and pockets of powder on lee slopes. Three terrain parks are in great order, there’s heaps of fun for all the family and we’re well set to carry on until our planned closing date of October 10 subject to conditions.”

In Canterbury, visitors to Mt Hutt ski area have until October 17 to revel in a two metre base and the festivities of Spring Fest (until October 10).

“Our snow cover is just awesome and we have a huge range of activities from the pure fun to the serious sport well underway,” says Ski Area Manager Dave Wilson. “There’s plenty for all ages and stages to enjoy both on and off the snow. This is a favourite time of year at Mt Hutt – everyone’s laid back and fun is the main item on the agenda.”
