Thames-Coromandel community groups receive over $100,000

Village festivals, lifeguards, first aid, youth projects, a New Year's Eve event and a tsunami early warning system feature among this year's grants allocated by Thames-Coromandel District Council (TCDC) Community Boards.

Community Grants to help organisations pay for specific projects or maintenance of facilities that benefit the community.

Tairua-Pauanui
Tairua-Pauanui Community Board awarded grants to contribute toward a circular walkway accessible from Tairua, purchase of musical instruments for the Kidzmusik programme and installation of a tsunami early warning system covering Tairua and Pauanui.

Brits at the Beach was awarded funding through the Tairua Information and Community Services Society toward a drive-in movie, youth disco, village fete, main street closure and for decorations for Tairua during next month's festival.

Whangamata
Whangamata Community Board awarded $18,500 toward the Whangamata Summer Festival; $6,000 each to Whangamata Sports and Recreation trust and Whangamata Community Health and the remaining $5,000 to organisations including Whangamata Harbour Care and Whangamata Night Owls.

Mercury Bay
Mercury Bay organisations and projects receiving grants from their Community Board included Hot Water Beach Lifeguard Service, Kuaotunu Environmental Action's predator control programme, Whangapoua Voluntary Rural Fire Force and Project Kiwi Trust's protection of ground nesting birds such as kiwi, variable oyster catcher and dotterel.

Among the larger grants in Mercury Bay was $1,000 toward Matarangi Ratepayers Association's annual summer carnival; $1,450 toward Kuaotunu Land Search and rescue's Otama Marathon fund raising event; $2,250 toward a computer suite for the Mercury Bay Cooperating Parish office and $3,750 toward a fire protection system for the Mercury Bay Museum.

Coromandel-Colville
Just over $20,000 was awarded by Coromandel-Colville Community Board among groups including Coromandel School of Mines and Historical Society, Manaia Marae Committee, Coromandel Scout Group, Coromandel Business Association and Coromandel Emergency Services.

The largest grants went to Koputauaki Combined Community Centre ($5,000) and Coromandel Community Recreational Society ($5,300).
