QUEENSTOWN

The passion and fever of African and Brazilian rhythms and beats will set Queenstown on fire during this year’s ASB Queenstown JazzFest (21-25 October).

The ‘world music’ of Brazilian legend Marku Ribas and 13-man Batucada Sound Machine, together with eight-piece funk band Humlai, will spice things up at the resort town’s major springtime event.

Both promise distinctly Latino performances that blend several music genres with tantalizing flavours from around the world.

Queenstown JazzFest Trust Chairman Luke Baldock said one of the greatest strengths of the annual festival was the diverse range of music styles that could be celebrated under the umbrella of ‘jazz.’

“This year we’re excited to present two related but distinctly unique concerts that explore different elements of Latin jazz,” he said.

“Both performances by Marku and Batucada combine African and Brazilian rhythms and music styles that break the boundaries from the traditional style of jazz into classical harmonies, contemporary beats and soulful melodies.”

On Saturday 23 October Marku Ribas makes his festival debut to an intimate audience at Millbrook’s The Millhouse. The highly celebrated singer, songwriter and soul master is described as “one of the true architects of Brazilian music.” His unique style fuses Brazilian rhythms with Caribbean and jazz elements among just some of his inspirations.

Back by popular demand and playing at the ASB Jazz Club on Sunday 24 October is Batucada Sound Machine, joined for one night only by funky eight-piece Humlai. Famous for their sheer energy and contemporary percussive explosion, Batucada embraces Pacific Soul, reggae, funk, dance and hip hop.

“If there’s one chance to cut loose on the dance floor and enjoy a musical extravaganza at the festival, then this is it,” said Mr Baldock.

Advance bookings are strongly recommended with limited tickets available for each act.

The ASB Queenstown JazzFest is Queenstown’s major springtime event. It brings music to the masses in a 5-day live music celebration from 21 to 25 October. The 32nd annual festival has a sensational line-up of more than 50 bands and 150 Kiwi and international performers.

Full details of all ticketed concerts and free gigs are available in the ASB Queenstown JazzFest programme, which is available at ASB branches in Queenstown and Remarkables Park. For online information on musicians go to www.asbjazzfest.co.nz
