Interesting times we live in and not without the most unexpected gifts from years long since departed –as Northern Ward councillor Jack Katavich found to his surprise this week.

Jack received an unsolicited letter this month from an anonymous person- admitting to a misspent youth which put the community to some expense- and enclosing cash in reparation.

The letter read as follows:-

“Sir,

“As you are a member of District Council please find enclosed $200 in reparation for a 25 plus-year-ago sin committed. I was a passenger in a car which was used to knock down some signposts on road verges.

“All that is hidden will be revealed, if not in this life certainly at our individual judgment by Jesus Christ who is true God and true man. Kindly convey to the appropriate authority.”

The letter was unsigned.

“At first I thought it may have been a hoax, but I’m now convinced it is somebody with a very genuine intent to put right things in their past which have obviously been troubling their conscience,” Cr Katavich says.

“I have passed the funds on to the council as a contribution towards some worthwhile community project in the Northern Ward,” he says.
