If you own a dog and you haven’t yet registered it there is now an instant $300 fine if your dog is found without a current registration.

With 85% of dog owners having paid their dog registration, the Palmerston North City Council is now taking firm action against those who have neglected to pay their fees.

"There is a legal requirement to have your dog registered," Wayne Jameson, Head of Environmental Protection Services said, "and the fees go towards a wide range of animal control services that the PNCC provide. Council officers are now out visiting dog owners who haven’t paid their fees."

Although registration fees were due on 1 July 2010, and dog owners were offered a discount for those who paid their fees within the month, dog owners are encouraged to pay their fees as soon as possible.

There are approximately 5500 dog owners in Palmerston North.
