Is your Car your Business Card? Are business Cards a thing of the past? Vehicle signs, a thing of the future!

Are you constantly looking for ways to promote your business? Handing out hundreds of business cards to every stranger that walks into your shop? Business cards are expensive, and yes, while they serve their purpose of providing information, how many of you have lost business cards to the hungry monsters that are your wallet, your car, office desk, couch or those ones that just disappeared. Are business cards becoming a thing of the past? Or do you prefer to have that physical contact with these printed beauties.

Our proposal to you is that maybe your car is your business card? Being in the sign writing industry for several years has meant we've watched the increase of vehicle signage and the decrease of business cards. There used to be a day where dad would come home from work with a pocket full of cards, he would pull them out, scatter them across the bench and then mum would proceed to organise the cards into the rather large plastic card file we had. I used to look forward to the day where I could do the same, have my own card file on my office desk, or kitchen bench. However, I have been working at Hamilton Stripes and Signs since February 2010 and I'm lucky if get given one business card a month?

So what does this mean for the printing companies? There are still plenty around, and they all advertise being able to make business cards. YellowOnline advertises 26 printers in Hamilton, which is a lot. My question is, if people are no longer giving out business cards, how are these 26 printing companies surviving? Perhaps people still order cards but are more selective on who they give them out to? Maybe it is as a result of the technology driven world we live in?

About two weeks ago, our company decided we needed new business cards, and in a strange twist of fate, instead of calling upon our local printer, we made them ourselves. Banner printed business cards, different I know, and yes, we do get strange looks from our customers when they get given flexible business cards. But this is what works for us. Giving out your business card (or not giving out your business card) should give customer, or suppliers a sense of who you are as a company. We print banner (and all other signs), so why not make banner business cards??

This brings me back to the issue of, "Is your car your business card?". Are you able to successfully promote your business using car signage? We say yes! Why can't strategically planned vehicle signs promote your business? If you own your own company you will be aware of the laws around owning company vehicles and needing to have them sign written, but why not take it further than just the bare minimum. Car sign writing, is an affective and affordable way of getting your information out there. If business cards are slipping into the background, why not step up and change things before its too late.
