Modern cloth nappy expert Kate Meads, known throughout New Zealand as ‘The Nappy Lady’, will be in Oamaru on Wednesday, 20 October to help launch Council’s new cloth nappy scheme. Council will start selling subsidised cloth nappies from Friday 22 October.

Council’s solid waste officer, Gerry O’Neill, said he is delighted Kate Meads is coming to Oamaru to introduce new parents to the benefits of using cloth nappies.

“Kate travels the country promoting cloth nappies and talking with councils and parents. Over the past few years she has run nappy workshops for numerous organisations around New Zealand, has been a guest speaker at parent and child shows, and has been interviewed many times on NZ Television programmes such as Good Morning and Breakfast.”

Mr O’Neill said Kate will talk to parents about the different types of cloth nappies, the benefits of using them, and answer questions about using and caring for nappies.“Kate is passionate about modern cloth nappies. She provides parents with quality, unbiased and unbranded information to help parents make informed decisions.”

Council’s cloth nappy scheme is aims to reduce the 600,000kg of sanitary waste per year going to the district’s landfills.

From October 22, Council will sell cloth nappy starter packs, worth approximately $120, for just $10. Starter packs from four different suppliers will be available to parents with babies aged 0 to 6 months, or to expectant mothers in their last trimester of pregnancy, who live in the Waitaki District.

Kate Meads will be at The Frog Prince in Thames Street Oamaru on Wednesday, 20 October from 10am to 12noon. She will demonstrate how to use different cloth nappy styles and answer questions.

Samples of Council’s cloth nappy starter packs will be available to view, along with an information brochure about starter packs and application forms.
