A first for Kaipara, the Art Awards are the culmination of a number of displays held in Kaipara District
Council’s Dargaville and Kaiwaka offices during the year. These exhibitions were put together to
showcase the work of artists throughout the District, and to make art more readily available to the
public through the use of Council’s public space.

The final 2010 exhibition is now on in the Dargaville Council Chambers foyer, off Station Road until
Monday 15 November. Members of the public are invited to view the works during normal business
hours, and to vote for the entry they like best.

This exhibition will conclude with an Art Awards evening on Thursday 11 November from 5.00 pm to
7.00 pm in the Council Chambers where, thanks to generous sponsorship, the prizes will be awarded
for first, second and third place. There will also be a “people’s choice” prize.

This competition is a first for Kaipara and the hope is to build on this for next year and make it part of
Kaipara’s Art Calendar.

Councillor Julia Sutherland is impressed by the quality of the works submitted for this inaugural event,
which range from paintings to weaving, sculpture and jewellery. “While some entries may not be
very closely allied to the theme “Celebrating Kaipara’s Abundance”, all demonstrate the creativity of
talented individuals in Kaipara’s communities and we’re delighted at the interest and support shown,”
she said.
