Hundreds of Karapiro Crew volunteers gather at Lake Karapiro today (Saturday 23 October) for their final briefing before the 2010 World Rowing Championships.

And stars of the New Zealand rowing team will be there to thank the volunteers for giving their time and skills to the event.

Nearly 600 volunteers will work at the Championships. Today they will be issued with their uniforms, accreditation pass and other materials before a mass photocall on NZ’s biggest temporary grandstand.

Amongst the ranks of volunteers are:

* 28 married couples

* Volunteers from 11 countries

* Several families and siblings

* The oldest volunteer is 84 and the youngest is 14

* Olympic champions, world champions and many former NZ national rowers

“The event could not happen without the Karapiro Crew,” says CEO Tom Mayo. “Our volunteers are crucial to the success of the World Rowing Championships and the quality and commitment of the Karapiro Crew is fantastic.”

The Karapiro Crew volunteer programme is sponsored by Mighty River Power.
