Halloween not such a 'treat' for pets

Ghosts, ghouls, witches and vampires can be scary at the best of times, but spare a thought for our furry friends this Halloween who may not enjoy a trick or treat as much as the rest of us.

“Trick or treating this Halloween should be kept strictly for humans,” Pieter Verhoek, President of the Companion Animal Society branch of the New Zealand Veterinary Association, warns.

He said 'treats' like chocolates and lollies are not good for your pets. “They can be toxic and in worst case scenarios lead to death."

“Keep people treats for people, and pet treats for pets. Although, big brown eyes can be hard to resist it’s important you don’t feed your pets sweets this Halloween.”

In addition, dogs can get over-excited with waves of visitors appearing at your door in unfamiliar attire.

“If your dog is not used to visitors or children you should keep your pet inside, away from the front door.”

He said sometimes in the excitement or nervousness of it all someone can get bitten, usually by accident as opposed to intentional.

“Ensure your dog is safe inside protected from the noise and excitement of visitors and any tricks they may intend on playing.”

In addition, veterinarian Pieter Verhoek said “if you’re intent on dressing your pet up make sure their costume is comfortable and has no loose extras that can get chewed off, swallowed and stuck in their stomach."

Finally, keep candles out of the way of curious noses and paws, and non-pet friendly decorations out of reach.
