By working together, Taupō District Council and the Department Of Conservation has made a million dollar view even better.

DOC’s Tauira Kaitiaki Taiao, Māori Conservation Cadetship Programme has enhanced one of the most spectacular views in the country and at the same time, has gained practical work experience.    For generations, the Radio Station lookout has been the place to go to show off all that Taupō has to offer, with the view taking in everything from Tauhara to Tongariro National Park.  TDC had planned to improve the area and with the two parties coming together, the result has been a very cost effective project with no labour cost.

Manager – Parks and Open Spaces John Ridd said it was win / win for both parties.  “Having the students here and working on such a valuable project for the community allowed them to get some experience under their belts and Council has received a cost effective outcome for ratepayers.”

“The spot was already a natural viewing point for locals and visitors.  Now everyone now has a clear and safe viewing platform to take in the spectacular views of Great Lake Taupō.”

He thanked the 15 cadets for their hard work and commitment to the job and wished them well for their upcoming graduation.

Whilst here, the students stayed at Rauhoto Marae and were trained by Nelson and Marlborough Institute of Technology.  The practical work experience will contribute to their trade certified qualification and their careers with the Department of Conservation.

Information panels will be added in the future to enhance the visitor’s experience highlighting the many treasures that can be seen from the deck.  The viewing platform is due to be finished at the end of next week.
