A new chapter in Waikato’s history started today, as 14,500 new residents were welcomed into the Waikato district.

Under the Auckland governance arrangements, the Waikato district today expanded geographically to incorporate the southern part of Franklin and inheriting 14,500 new residents, over 4,000 water connections and nearly 750 kilometres of roads.

“We welcome the people of Franklin into our district,” Waikato Mayor Allan Sanson said.  “While we are a vast district, we are also a close-knit one.  As a rural council, we understand the issues our rural communities face, and we are passionate about continuing the growth of all our Waikato towns and villages,” he said.

This morning Waikato District Council opened a fourth area office in Tuakau.  Chief Executive, Gavin Ion said his staff were looking forward to being able to offer northern residents a range of services from such a convenient location.

“Our Tuakau Office has a staff of 25 to help residents with rates, recording maintenance issues, refuse collection, consent issues and other council services.

“We are very fortunate that the majority of staff for our new office have come to us from the former Franklin District Council.  Their knowledge of the district and the people will be invaluable to us, and they are a much welcome addition to the WDC team,” he said.

The Tuakau Office is located on 2 Dominion Road.  Opening hours are Monday to Friday 8.30am – 5pm.  For more information please visit council’s website www.waikatodistrict.govt.nz
