John Key's claim that the new housing accommodation regulations for MPs’ is a tightening of the rules is wrong and shows again how messy the allowances system has become, said the Green Party today.

“MPs’ who live permanently in Wellington should not be able to nominate a home base outside of the capital in order to receive more subsidies from the taxpayer,” said Green Party Co-leader Metiria Turei said.

“This decision clearly demonstrates an independent system is needed for deciding MP allowances. Having MPs’ set the rules for their allowances is not working and is not inspiring public confidence in our democracy.

“An independent overhaul of the system is vital to ensuring that New Zealand politics are kept honest and transparent. An independent system for determining MP allowances and remuneration is the only way to restore public confidence.

“John Key must establish an independent body with the role of developing a cleaner, more transparent system that clearly separates personal expenses from remuneration and legitimate work expenses. He must commit to making the necessary changes.

“The public deserve a system that is clear, simple and fair. The current system is undermining public trust in the Parliament of this country and cannot continue as it is,” said Mrs Turei.
