In a packed auditorium last Friday, October 29th, Taika Waititi's BOY won the Festival's main award, the Cinekid Lion Jury Prize and the kid's Moviesquad Cinekid Award.
Thomas G. Murphy, fellow Kiwi writer/director, accepted the award on behalf of the film's director and producers. Cinekid had invited Thomas to the 24th annual film festival representing New Zealand. Thomas delighted the audience in leading them in chanting "Kia Ora, New Zealand" after accepting a call from his mum on stage asking where he was, possibly one of the longest-distance greetings by a Kiwi filmmaker, since the Netherlands and New Zealand are on the opposite sides of the planet.
The Cinekid Festival is the largest international film, television and new media festival for children aged 4 to 14. Each year the festival is attended by over 50,000 children, parents and international guests.
