The DCC’s 650-hectare Mt Watkin / Hikaroroa Reserve, on the slopes of the Waikouaiti River, is regarded as probably the best remaining example of dry coastal forest in Otago.
The DCC is inviting the public to an open day at the Reserve this weekend to enjoy the spectacular views, boulder fields and stunning matai, ribbonwood and kowhai forest.
On Sunday 14 November, between 10am and 4pm, the Reserve will be open to walkers with three options available – family-friendly, moderate and keen. Site maps will be available on the day. Walkers will need to wear sturdy footwear and to be prepared for four seasons in one day.
To reach Mount Watkin Road, allow about 45 minutes by car from Dunedin. If you are approaching from the south, travel on SH1 before turning left at Hawksbury onto McGrath Rd. Turn left onto Ramrock Road and take the first right onto Mt Watkin Road. The reserve is approximately 6km from the intersection of Ramrock and Mt Watkin Roads.
If the weather is bad, the open day will be postponed until Sunday 21 November. Check the Cancellation Line on 471 7555 from 8am.
There are no toilet facilities at the reserve but there will be a portaloo at the gate. Neither guns nor dogs are permitted on the Reserve.
