The two top men’s sides remain way out in front after five rounds of Scarbro Caro Bowl as both Parnell and Campbell Park scored another 6-0 each. Parnell have the maximum 40 points after not having dropped a match the whole season.

It helps Parnell that Kiwi No3 Rubin Statham has played several matches, including last night where he defeated Herne Bay’s Kyle August 6-3 6-0. Mark Nielsen, Anton Bettink and Steve Downs all completed the tie in straight sets over their opponents in singles and combined for straight set doubles wins too.

Campbell Park using Aussie pro Dane Propoggia at No1 also didn’t drop a set in their straight set defeat of Royal Oak. They now sit just one point behind Parnell on 39 points having dropped just one match in the season.

Remuera are in third place after their 5-1 over Cockle Bay where American No1 Paul Koenke dropped his match to Matt Meredith, however the remainder of the Remuera team was too strong and is now on 21 points, one ahead of Blockhouse Bay who were 5-1 winners over Pompallier.

The Bay side had Russian-born Kiwi Artem Sitak who is ranked around 300 in the world in the top singles who defeated Teo Susnjak in straight sets. Sitak along with a number of other Caro Bowl players may be absent next week as a result of the US$25,000 Configure Express women’s Challenger and US$15,000 men’s Futures in Wellington which start on Tuesday through Sunday.

The best of the men’s sixth round clashes looks to be Cockle Bay at home against Parnell. It’s always difficult to tell who Cockle Bay will produce on the night and from what part of the country they are from. It will be a good opportunity for people in the Eastern Suburbs to see some top tennis. Other sixth round contests are Campbell Park aiming for another 6-0 victory when they host Pompallier. Royal Oak are away to Blockhouse Bay and Remuera have a home tie against Herne Bay.

In the women’s fifth round it was the young guns of Royal Oak who just won a countback for their side over Kohimarama.

Leela Beattie and Emily Fanning won their singles and doubles matches as Royal Oak came away winners 55-52 on games countback after matches and sets had been equal. The stars for Kohimarama were Heidi Stewart and Danielle Feneridis, both of whom won their singles and doubles, but it was just three games which now keep Royal Oak at the top of the points table on 31 points, with a bye to come ahead of Parnell on 29 points.

Parnell were big victors against bottom placed Glendowie 6-0 while Remuera grabbed their first win of the season with a close fought 4-2 triumph over Mission Bay. Mission Bay are now at home versus Parnell in the sixth round while the quaint surroundings of Pompallier tennis club will have a visit from Kohimarama and Glendowie are at home against Remuera with both sides close on the points table.
