Water main renewal works in the Ravensbourne area will be starting in the next few weeks, resulting in traffic disruption on SH88 for up to six months.
The existing water main, located and supplying water to properties on the east side of Ravensbourne Road, is deteriorating, resulting in a number of recent pipe bursts.
The water main will be replaced from Adderley Terrace to Jessie Street, with the first section, from Adderley Terrace to approximately Wanaka Street, laid in the carriageway, and from this point to Jessie Street, in the footpath.
“Although it would be desirable to lay the entire new main in the footpath in order to move it out of a busy road, this is not possible due to the presence of many other utility services there,” Camilla Bennett, DCC Engineering Project Manager, says.
While the new pipe is being constructed, one lane of Ravensbourne Road will be temporarily blocked. During this time, traffic may be controlled by stop/go boards.
In order to reduce the disruption to road users, works affecting traffic flow will be carried out between 9.00 am and 4.00 pm, Monday to Saturday. Works not affecting traffic flow may be carried out between 7.00 am and 7.00 pm. Any excavations made in the road during the day will be backfilled and sealed over at the end of each working day.
Any planned disruption to water supply will be notified to those affected. This is likely to be towards the end of the programmed works, and should be of short duration.
Construction work is planned for the week commencing 22 November, 2010, and should be completed by the end of March 2011. No work will be undertaken during the Christmas/New Year holiday period.
The total cost of the renewal project is approximately $900,000 and the contractor carrying out the works will be Delta Utility Services Ltd.
Both Delta and Chalmers Community Board chair Jan Tucker wish to thank the public for their anticipated co-operation and patience while the work is underway.
The timing of a further phase of pipe renewal, from the fertiliser works to Adderley Terrace, has yet to be confirmed.
