HASTINGS

Hastings is having a Christmas party to celebrate the grand opening of a number of new and improved facilities at Cornwall Park.

Christmas in Cornwall Park is being held on Sunday, December 12, with the Family Fun Day from 12noon-4pm, followed by the Hastings Citizen Band’s 125th Community Carols in the Park from 6pm-9pm.

During the Annual Plan process the community called for the retention and upgrade of the Holt Memorial Display House and the Reserve Management Plan adopted in May last year identified improvements to the old paddling pool and aviary.

A safer and more accessible splash pad water feature is being constructed in the paddling pool’s place. The aviary is not only getting new educational signage, new murals and new landscaping but new birds are being progressively introduced.

The main pathways have been sealed to give better accessibility for walkers, cyclists and those with mobility difficulties. New signs about the history of the park and directional information are also being installed.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says the overall project culminates in a fresh new look for the 109-year-old park which has become an icon for Hastings and a valued family recreation destination.

“It’s important that we not only recognise the great new facilities but that we take the opportunity to recognise the Park as an important asset for our community,” Mayor Yule says.

Deputy Mayor Cynthia Bowers will officially kick off the Family Fun Day by turning on the Splash Pad at midday so children can cool down while Mayor Yule opens John Holt Memorial House.

Family entertainment, hosted by MoreFM, includes food stalls, face-painting by local kindergartens, bouncy castles, visits from the Clean-Up Fairy and Splash Planet’s Squirt, followed by a visit from Santa at 2pm – where Santa and Mayor Yule will hold a lolly scramble.
