Auckland's Mayor to open aquatic education forum

How do we achieve a sustainable future for all aspects of aquatic education and drowning prevention for the Auckland region? What are the Ministry of Education’s aquatic education learning outcomes for students? How can we all safely enjoy our beaches and waterways?

This is the subject up for discussion and debate at WaterSafe Auckland’s Aquatic Education and Drowning Prevention Forum at the Marine Rescue Centre tomorrow morning, to be opened by Mayor Len Brown.

“There is no one-size-fits all solution to meeting the needs of those living in and visiting the Auckland region,” says Sandy Harrop, WaterSafe Auckland’s CEO, “education, policy and strategy and local government investment all contribute to helping us, collectively, to continue delivering on our regional priorities.

The Mayor’s views on the subject will be followed by those of special guests Bob Harvey (Chair Auckland Waterfront Development Agency and President Surf Life Saving NZ), Denise Atkins (Senior Advisor to the Ministry of Education) and Ree Anderson (Regional Strategy, Community and Culture Manager, Auckland Council) and Dr Kevin Moran (CEO WaterSafe Auckland, Principal Lecturer in Health and Physical Education, Faculty of Education, University of Auckland and Co-Chair International Task Force on Open Water Drowning) who will chair the discussion. 

“With representation from the formal education sector, local government, the water safety, learn to swim, rescue and health & safety sectors we are sure to achieve some thoughtful discussion,” says Sandy, “and we look forward to some sustainable ideas and recommendations for enhancing the future direction of water safety education for all Auckland.”
