The Invercargill City Council has opened a condolence book for the families of the men who perished in the Pike River Mine, Communications Manager, Eirwen Tulett said today.

“Mayor Tim Shadbolt wants Southlanders to have the opportunity to express sympathy and pay their respects to the families of those who died.

“He also wants to pass on to the Grey District Council and the people of the district that they are in the thoughts and prayers of the people of Invercargill and Southland.

“Mayor Tim sends his personal support and sympathy to Grey District Mayor Tony Kokshoorn who has conducted himself with great humanity and dignity and to all of those involved in the operation at Pike River Mine.”

Mrs Tulett said the condolence book is located in the foyer of the Civic Administration building, 101 Esk Street, Invercargill and will remain open until Christmas Eve.

Council’s Staff Social Club will tomorrow (Friday) hold a staff collection, the proceeds of which will go to the ANZ account that has been opened for the Pike River families.  Members of the public are also welcome to leave donations at the Council Help Desk
