When the second edition of the HRV Cup domestic Twenty20 competition kick-starts in Hamilton today, it will unleash an individual battle that will be at least as compelling as that of the six teams.

The Mitre10 MVP identifies the best individual performers in the HRV Cup, and with a host of international stars joining the BLACKCAPS and the best of New Zealand’s crop of domestic players, competition will be intense.

“Players who bat and bowl are vital in the Twenty20 format and I expect to see these ‘two-for one’ players at the top of the Mitre10 MVP table when the HRV Cup concludes,” said BLACKCAP, Jacob Oram who is expecting to return from injury during the competition.

“The HRV Cup is a competition where key players are able to take control of a match and guide their team to victory so it was no surprise to see guys at the top of last year’s MVP points table predominantly coming from the best performing teams.”

Oram noted that traditional cricket skills of the Yorker, lofted drive and slog sweep were now being complemented by scoop shots, slow ball bouncers and acrobatic fielding to create a high-octane form of cricket that is as exciting for players as it is for fans.

Last summer’s HRV Cup Mitre10 MVP winner Scott Styris will miss the early rounds of the HRV Cup while he is on tour with the BLACKCAPS in India.

One of the areas of most interest is to see how well domestic players compare to the performances of the overseas imports this summer. The Mitre10 MVP rankings will be the perfect way to measure the impact these overseas players have on the competition and to see how they measure up against the New Zealand based players.

Leading contenders for the Mitre10 MVP title for this year’s HRV Cup include:

Canterbury Wizards Dean Brownlie
Rob Nicol
Import to watch Ryan ten Doeschate Netherlands & Essex

Central Stags Doug Bracewell
Kieran Noema-Barnett
Import to watch Michael Yardy Sussex & England
