MILO Cup and Shield finals day 2 - Wellington Schools complete double

Wellington schools picked up all the silverware at the MILO Cup and Shield Finals today as Raroa Normal Intermediate and Tawa Intermediate claimed the respective national titles.

The second day of the MILO Cup and Shield Finals took place in beautiful conditions at Manawaroa and Ongley Parks in Palmerston North , as the two winners from yesterday's round robin faced off in each competition final with the losing teams from yesterday playing off for third and fourth.

Waihi School versus Raroa Normal Intermediate School

Raroa Normal Intermediate School 222/7 – Joseph Bowden 103 BEAT Waihi School 120 all out – Alastair Harvey 40, William Harvey 31, Joseph Bowden 3/22, Dylan Wood 4-23 by 102 runs

Waihi School won the toss and elected to bowl first.

They were soon put under pressure by the star of the day Joseph Bowden who added his name to the record books by scoring a blistering 103 off only 62 balls. His innings included an astonishing 15 fours and 2 sixes.

Bowden was given good support by Sam Gifkins and together they put on 77 for the fifth wicket.

It was a tough morning in the field for the boys from Waihi School and towards the end of the innings they were scampering around the outfield trying to stop the onslaught from Bowden who brought up his century in style with a big 6 over mid-wicket.

Buoyed from their large total Raroa Normal Intermediate put a lot of pressure on the Waihi top order. Brothers William and Alastair Harvey put on a partnership of 78 for the fourth wicket and it looked like their calm approach could get them close.

However, Raroa were relentless and Dylan Wood and Joseph Bowden bowled exceptionally well picking up 4/23 and 3/22 respectively.

Raroa Normal Intermediate are the MILO Cup champions for 2010.

Third and fourth play off match 

Christchurch South Intermediate School versus Berkley Normal Middle School

Berkley Normal Intermediate School 95/9 – Sam Frengley 23, Bailen Thatcher 5/21, Jesse Campbell 2/19 LOST TO Christchurch South Intermediate School 99/5 – Bailen Thatcher 38, Taylor Irie 31, Chris Swanson 2-14 by 5 wickets.

Berkley Normal Middle School won the toss and elected to make the most out of the hot conditions at Manawaroa Park by batting first.

They were soon put under early pressure by fast bowler Bailen Thatcher. Thatcher had Berkley on the ropes at 27/4. Sam Frengley and Alex Clare led the flight back for Berkley and put on 51 for the fifth wicket.

Thatcher came back for another spell and put pressure on Berkley’s lower order and restricted them to 95/9 for their 35 overs.

In reply a 65 run stand for the third wicket between Bailen Thatcher and Taylor Irie saw Christchurch South Intermediate take out third place for 2010.

Heaton Normal Intermediate School versus Tawa Intermediate School

Heaton Normal Intermediate 73/8 – Ruby Beresford 30*, Danielle Watson 3/18, Laura Gemmell 2/17 LOST TO Tawa Intermediate 77/4 – Jess Kerr 25* by 6 wickets.

Defending champions Tawa Intermediate won the toss and put Heaton Normal Intermediate in to bat. They soon had them under pressure early on at 9/3.

Ruby Beresford led the fight back for Heaton and anchored the innings with an unbeaten 30.

Beresford struggled for support at the other end with wickets falling regularly.

It was a tidy bowling performance from the Tawa girls and this was led by Danielle Watson and Laura Gemmell with 3/18 and 2/17 respectively.

Heaton bowled exceptionally well early on however Jess Kerr played a classy innings. Kerr scored consistently and all round the wicket picking up singles and boundaries regularly.

Her innings of 25 not out saw Tawa Intermediate home by six wickets to be back to back MILO Shield Champions.

Waimea Intermediate versus Berkley Normal Middle School

Waimea Intermediate 106/7 – Tayla Christensen 2/19, Issy Coombes 2/22 BEAT Berkley Normal Middle School 80 all out Claudia Green 3-7, Samantha Jordan 2/14 by 26 runs.

Berkley Normal Middle School won the toss and elected to field first.

It was a much better batting performance from the girls from Waimea Intermediate today and they were able to put solid partnerships together regularly.

Berkley still bowled consistent lines and Tayla Christensen 2/19 and Issy Coombes 2/22 were able to keep Waimea fighting for their runs.

Berkley Normal Middle School struggled to get key partnerships going. They lost wickets regularly due to consistent line and length bowling by Claudia Green 3/7 and Samantha Jordan 2/14.
