In a country where drowning is the second highest cause of accidental death for children, there are still too many who have not had the opportunity to learn essential swimming and survival skills, and professional tuition still remains inaccessible for many.

WaterSafe Auckland’s Break-Away Aquatic Holiday Programme starting at the Otara Leisure Centre next Monday seeks to fill that gap, with four days of FREE aquatic activities for 11-13yr olds.

“Swimming is the most popular leisure activity for boys and girls in New Zealand,” says Angelo Naude of WaterSafe Auckland’s Aquatic Education Team.

“This programme will provide the opportunity to learn essential water safety skills and knowledge. It also features surf sports and safety together with snorkelling, swimming and water sports – all with an emphasis on keeping yourself safer in, on and around water this summer.

Break-Away runs Monday to Thursday, 9am to 2pm, at the Otara Leisure Centre, 115 Bairds Road, Otara.

There are three 4-day programmes scheduled – the first Monday 20th to Thursday 23rd December, followed by a second and third commencing Monday the 17th and Monday the 24th January respectively.

Full details and enrolment forms are available at www.watersafe.org.nz.

The Break-Away Aquatic Holiday Programme is coordinated by WaterSafe Auckland, with delivery by WaterSafe Auckland and Surf Life Saving with funding support from the Ministry of Social Development.

Break-Away is a Ministry initiative to provide stimulating, fun and structured holiday activity for young people who would not normally have access to such activities.
