Community group helps to keep NZ beautiful

The Gibbston Community Association held their 6th annual roadside clean up for Keep New Zealand Beautiful Week on Saturday.


Transit NZ and Works Infrastructure assisted 25 community volunteers as they collected rubbish along the main entry corridor to Queenstown along SH6 through Gibbston. QLDC provided rubbish bags and gloves.


Event co-organiser and GCA committee member Tim Morrison-Deaker said, “The outstanding thing for me was the community spirit, which was classically Gibbston, having kids involved and families young and old taking pride in our community. It is great that no one feels that they are too big to get involved.”


Works Infrastructure posted road signs and provided fluoro vests so that all volunteers were kept safe along the busy highway.


“Works were fantastic to deal with and provided a positive presence on the day. We really appreciate Transit support by donating the Works traffic management plan and supplies,” said event co-organiser and GCA committee member Jason Moss said.


“What we found most were DB bottles, Pall Mall cigarettes and KFC wrappers, so we have now worked out the profile of those most likely to litter in the District,” quipped Morrison-Deaker.


Peregrine Wines hosted a community barbecue following the clean up. GCA committee member and owner/Marketing Director of Peregrine, Greg Hay said, “It is part of what is good about being affiliated with the Gibbston community. Peregrine is one of the more visible wineries in Gibbston and it is a central location for the community to gather. This was a nice way to say thanks to people who took time out on a Saturday to support another very good community initiative, which is taking pride in the Gibbston and presenting an image that we’re proud of where we live and that’s how we want our community presented.”
