Heavy rain and high lake levels has forced the closure of several local walking tracks said Queenstown Lakes District Council parks manager Gordon Bailey.

The tracks concerned are:

  • Wanaka Glendhu Bay Track
  • Kelvin Peninsula Walkway
  • Wanaka Outlet Track

Mr Bailey said significant rain and the high water levels had caused washouts and scouring in some places and the decision had been made to close the tracks as a precautionary measure.
“The QLDC has made every effort to signpost the track closures but signs don’t always stay put,” he said. “We advise recreational walkers to postpone any planned excursions on these three tracks for the time being.”

He also advised people to exercise caution on other tracks around the district until the weather changed and the ground had time to dry out.

Repairs to the damaged tracks will be made in a few weeks’ time once the lake level drops.
