O’Hagan’s Viaduct Harbour 5km Series – 11 January 2011

Scott Winton won in 14m 54s, from Johnny McKee 14m 58s and Kimberley Smith who set a fresh women’s record for the course of 14m 59s. Willie Keihanen from Finland was fourth in 15m 24s. Alison Bogie was the second woman in 18m 35s followed by Jane Anderson in 18m 37s.

 

Takapuna 5km Rat Race, Milford – 12 January 2011

Sam Franklin won in 16m 5s from Andrew Wilson 19m 26s. Tracey Futter was third overall and first woman in 20m 26s. Helene Helms was second in 21m 24s.

 

Athletics Mt Smart Stadium – 15 January 2011

Michael Cochrane of Tauranga was in startling form in the 400m hurdles, setting a New Zealand M19 record of 51.25s.

This lowered the record of 51.72s set by Nic O’Brien in Melbourne in 1999.

Cochrane, who competed at last year’s world junior championships in Canada, said that he was confident of getting the record going into the race on Saturday.

“I ran 51.6s in training last weekend, I was hoping for 51s low to 50 seconds ish, so I was really happy with that,” he said.

Hard training sessions have been the key to Cochrane’s latest improvement.

“I train two or three times a day sometimes, I do just as much as I possibly can and it’s just recently starting to look better in training,” he added.

His next goal is the standard of 50.84s for the World University Games in Shenzhen China in August. Cochrane’s 51.25s places him seventh on the New Zealand all-time rankings.

In his first race in two years Aunese Curreen held on for a determined victory over Michael Whitehead in the 800m. Curreen of Samoa, who won the New Zealand 800m title race in 2007 and 2008, recorded 1m 55.57s to Whitehead’s 1m 55.65s.

James Mortimer set a personal best of 48.12s in the 400m in beating Shay Taylor who also ran a career best of 49.00s. 

Isaac Tatoa won the sprint double of 60m in 7.01s and 100m in 11.12s. Frazer Wickes was sharp over 200m in 21.84s. Rochelle Coster was a clear winner of the women’s 100m in 12.11s and Louise Jones triumphed in the 200m in 24.71s.

National 10,000m champion Stephen Lett continued his winning form in the 3000m in 8m 23.97s, to head in Alex Parlane by three seconds.

Imogen Hull (13) of Whangarei set a Northland W16 5000m record of 20m 32.16s, in finishing second to Georgie Grgec who ran 17m 49.56s.

Highlights in the field events came from Julia Ratcliffe sending the hammer out to 60.30m, Nneka Okpala clearing 12.72m in the triple jump, Damian Smuts throwing double of 14.80m in the shot put and 52.48m in the hammer, Sarah Button’s 42.11m discus throw, Scott McLaren with 54.54m in the javelin throw and high jumps of 1.82m by Elizabeth Lamb and 1.94m by Sam Vesey.

 

Wharf to Wharf 25km road race, Orapiu to Matiatia – 15 January 2011

Scott Winton made it five years in a row in the annual Wharf to Wharf 25km road race from Orapiu to Matiatia on Saturday.

Winton was in control of the demanding hilly course throughout winning in 1h 33m 21s, nearly eight minutes ahead of 2009 Round the Bays winner Roman Kruszewski.

Winton said that he has felt good in training over the Christmas break.

“It is a good hit out early in the year and I’m in view of equalling Mark Bright’s six wins in the event,” said Winton.

Graeme Pearson repeated his third placing of last year, running 20 seconds faster in 1h 43m 57s.

Johanna Ottosson retained her women’s title in 1h 47m 8s, beating Debbie Fillery by over eight minutes.

Allison Roe, winner of the Boston and New York marathons in 1981, was second overall and woman’s winner in the associated 7km race from Kennedy Point to Matiatia. Roe (53) continues to enjoy her running and intends to compete in a number of the major off road events in the South Island.

“I’ve just been invited back to Boston in April to celebrate 30 years since I won the marathon there. If I had had more notice I may have put the training in to run the race again,” said Roe.

 

New Zealand Race Walkers 15km Championship, Ngataringa Bay Devonport – 16 January 2011

Graeme Jones won in 1h 16m 43s from Mike Parker 1h 17m 25s. Matthew Holcroft matched strides with Jones to lap eight in the ten lap event, and then fell off the pace to finish third in 1h 22m 54s. David Sim was fourth in 1h 28m 54s. Maggie Bradley won the women’s 15km in 1h 42m 15s with Shirley Barber second in 1h 49m 16s.

Eastside 5km River Run – 11 January 2011

Jai Davies-Campbell won in 16m 54s from Andrew Wark 17m 58s. Helen Rountree was the first woman home in 18m 22s.

Open Meeting, Tauranga Domain – 15 January 2011

Ryan Howe M19 100m 10.97s (+2.6) 200m 22.46s (+2.0). Abby Goldie G14 100m 12.64s (+3.5) and 200m 26.66s (+1.0). Tracey Hale SW 200m 26.49s (+1.0). Ben Ruthe SM 3000m 8m 46.00s, Julian Oakley M19 3000m 8m 46.81s, Iain Macdonald SM 3000m 8m 59.35s. Luke Davison M16 shot put 14.36m, discus 31.83m and javelin 44.70m.

Lifestyle Sports Waterfront 5km Series – 11 January 2011

Stuart Grange won in 16m 40s from Greg Darbyshire 16m 53s and Andrew Wharton 17m 2s. US visitor Nicole Feest was the first woman in 17m 2s, from Sarah Thorpe 18m 4s and Wendy Cottrell-Teahan 18m 18s. Tim Dutton won the 5km walk in 28m 30s with Jackie Wilson the first woman walker in 34m 6s.

 

World Cross Country Championships Trial, Trentham Park Upper Hutt – 15 January 2011

Daniel Wallis of Wellington Scottish won the senior men’s 12km trial in 39m 29s. Wallis led the whole way, in the warm breezy conditions, beating Adam Carlson by 14 seconds. Carlson from Hutt Valley passed James Coubrough on the final lap. Coubrough of Scottish recorded 39m 53s for third.

Penny Peskett of Pakuranga came through on the final lap, of the dry and hard surface course, to win the women’s 8km trial in 28m 13s. Sarah Biss of Hamilton Hawks led over the first three laps but was unable to hold Peskett over the final stages having to settle for second in 28m 22s. Nicole Feest of Colorado, partner of Wallis, was third in 28m 40s with national cross country champion Fiona Crombie fourth in 29m 18s.

 

Athletics, Black Programme, Newtown Park – 15 January 2011

Hamish Carson won the 800m in 1m 53.45s, beating Tim Hawkes 1m 57.14s. Stephen Isaac won the 400m in 50.45s and the 110m hurdles in 15.15s (-1.2). In the sprints Sarah Hosegood recorded 12.78s (+7.0) in the 100m and 26.41s (+1.4) in the 200m. James Panton won the same double in 11.35s (-2.9) and 23.11s (+2.1). Sarah Drought won the 3000m in 9m 44.34s while in the 3000m walk Peter Baillie clocked 15m 55.66s and Alana Barber 16m 41.71s. Ryan Roselli cleared 6.66m (+1.9) in the long jump.

Brian Kemp won the 3km event in 9m 41s, from Eskild Landgrebe 9m 46s and Simon Leaning 10m 2s.

Shoe Clinic Asics 5km Series – 11 January 2011

Rowan Hooper won in 14m 58s from Mark Bailey 15m 23s, Matt Ingram 15m 34s, Carsten Joergensen 15m 42s and Glynn Hadley 15m 52s. Alexandra Williams was the first woman in 17m 59s with Tracy Crossley second in 18m 0s.

 

Athletics, QEII Stadium – 15 January 2011

Tim Jones won the 100m in 10.82s (+1.6) and Nick Ash took out the 200m in 22.70s (-1.9). Kelsey Berryman won the W19 100m in 12.55s (+0.8) while Fiona Morrison won the 200m in 25.84s (-2.2) and the 100m hurdles 14.51s (+0.8). Abbe Watson won the women’s 400m in 58.79s. Malcolm Hicks won the 1500m in 3m 47.96s (the fastest time in New Zealand this season) from Brett Tingay 3m 51.07s and Luke Hurring 3m 51.25s. Richard Bennett (46) ran 4m 13.82s, Tony McManus (60) 4m 35.11s, Hannah Newbould W19 4m 27.87s and Kellie Palmer 4m 29.53s. Carsten Joergensen (40) recorded 16m 16.84s in the 5000m.

Rebecca Hodgson W19 hammer 47.04m, Michael Dewar M16 hammer 40.70m, Hayden Hall M19 discus 47.86m and Nicolas McGrath M16 discus 40.84m.

 

Valerie Adams confirmed for ITM on 26 February

Olympic, World and Commonwealth shot put champion Valerie Adams has confirmed that she will start her 2011 campaign by competing at the International Track Meet at QEII Stadium on Saturday 26 February. Adams will join Nick Willis and Nikki Hamblin who will also be competing.

Entries are now open for both pre-programme and the international meeting. Entries have already been accepted from the following countries; USA, Australia, New Caledonia and Samoa.

2010 WORLD RANKINGS

The authoritative American magazine Track & Field News has just published their world rankings for 2010 in their World-famous annual edition.

Eight New Zealand athletes feature amongst the rankings.

Nick Willis 40th 1500m 3m 35.17s, Stuart Farquhar 9th javelin throw 85.35m, Brent Newdick 18th equal decathlon 8091 points, Nikki Hamblin 29th 800m 1m 59.66s and 39th 1500m 4m 5.93s, Kimberley Smith 26th marathon 2h 25m 21s and 11th half-marathon 1h 7m 55s, Valerie Adams 2nd shot put 20.86m, Beatrice Faumuina 23rd discus throw 61.11m, Rebecca Wardell 33rd heptathlon 5988 points.

 

Jacko Gill’s 5kg shot put of 23.86m at the New Zealand secondary schools championships in Hastings last month has been approved as the world youth record.

 

NEW ZEALAND’S FAVOURITE SPORTING MOMENT – Vote for Nikki Hamblin

There is a new category in the Westpac Halberg Awards – ‘New Zealand’s Favourite Sporting Moment’  promoted by SPARC. It gives the public the chance to vote on what was their most inspiring/exciting/magical moment in their opinion in 2010.  Nikki Hamblin’s Silver medal in Delhi has been chosen as one of the finalists. You can vote, remember Nikki is number 5 at www.skysport.co.nz and at the same time win the opportunity to attend the awards.
