Galbraith Brewing Company has long been committed to brewing superior artisan beers. Nothing but the world’s best will do when brewer Keith Galbraith sources his ingredients – the finest malted barley from the Czech Republic, first-class whole hops from Germany and supreme old-world yeast from Bavaria. Now after a long search Keith has found, perhaps the purest water supply in the world and it’s right here in New Zealand!

Craft brewers like Keith understand the importance of water to the quality of the beer. Galbraith’s has always used purified water, adjusting the mineral content to match the requirements of particular beer styles. But now Galbraith’s has teamed up with Te Waihou Reserve to use the pristine water from their Blue Spring near Putaruru in their MUNICH Lager.

Says Keith, “I’ve been searching for a source of artisan New Zealand water with the right mineral content for sometime. All the well known bottled water people thought I was mad.” A chance encounter with Ed Baggaley, General Manager of Aquasplash Ltd, the producer of Te Waihou Reserve bottled water, convinced Keith to visit the spring. “Apart from being one of the most beautiful springs I have ever seen, the water is absolutely pristine. It is truly a Champagne of waters!” And as luck would have it, the Blue Spring water is the perfect water for Galbraith’s renowned Munich Bavarian Style Lager, enhancing its rich full flavour.

Aptly named, Te Waihou means The New Water. It’s the newest ingredient in Galbraith’s Munich Bavarian Style Lager but it’s also the oldest. The aquifers that feed the 250-metre-deep spring were formed by ancient volcanic activity, filtering and discharging rain that began falling on the Mamaku Ranges centuries ago. The water flows from the spring at a rapid 42 cubic metres per minute, feeding the Waihou Stream. To preserve the beauty of the area and ensure sustainability of the spring and its purity, stringent environmental, aesthetic and technical criteria had to be met before the go-ahead was given for the waters of the Blue Spring to be used. Ed Baggaley says, “We are very pleased that Galbraith brewing has chosen our spring water for their premium beer and we are looking forward to this exciting venture.”

What the experts say of Galbraith’s current Munich Lager:

“A brilliant lager from a brewer that puts quality and attention to detail above everything else. A lager made by an enthusiast, for beer enthusiasts” 93 points, Bob Campbell MW.

“Munich is simply the best bottled beer in Auckland” Paul Tudor MW, Metro magazine.
