Council’s asking residents how traffic can be better managed on Havelock Road – making it safer and less congested for all road users between the Hastings and Havelock North town centres.

Transportation manager Jag Pannu says feedback so far from the community indicates more bike stands, showers at work, more frequent buses or a ‘‘joined up’ walk-cycle-bus network would make a difference to their choice of transport.

“Council is also calling for suggestions on how this critical road corridor, the second busiest commuter link in Hastings, remains available for car and truck users while still being cycle-friendly,” Mr Pannu says.

“This consultation will aid the iWay walking and cycling project but is a wider, more long-term study that will influence the management of all traffic on this road in future.”

Council is holding a number of public meetings on the issue and is looking for innovative and fresh ideas to keep this corridor working efficiently and not become choked up with traffic.

The first meeting is to be held at the Hawke’s Bay Opera House, Monday, February 21st between 8 am and 1pm in the Shakespeare Room.

Later the same day, a second meeting will be held in the Havelock North Community Centre between 2.30 pm and 6 pm in the Gallery Room.

Members of the public can get more information on the study by contacting meeting coordinator Nick Aiken on 06 8335114 or nick.aiken@opus.co.nz
