When local Member of Parliament Lianne Dalziel and Te Runanga o Ngai Tahu Chief Executive, Anake Goodall told Contact that many people in East Christchurch could not get to a service station to take advantage of the free LPG offer because their cars were out of petrol, Contact dispatched a gas cylinder swap truck to New Brighton Volunteer Fire Brigade in Hawke Street.

People in the area were able to swap cylinders for free refills at the Hawke Street location today without having to make their way to one of the free filling stations.

Tomorrow, Contact will have a truck stationed at the corner of New Brighton Road and Queensbury Street from 10am.

Contact’s Managing Director, David Baldwin said that Contact is doing what it can to help people who are in need. “There are a number of people in Christchurch East who still do not have basic service connections.

“Providing free Contact Rockgas LPG cylinder swaps is one of the ways we are helping. We are there for those who most need support,” he said.

Mr Baldwin said that Contact would also continue to provide free gas at two Christchurch stations. “We can see that in Christchurch East many people are still relying on LPG for hot water and cooking.

“We had anticipated that the need might lessen later this week as services were increasingly restored, however we can see that need is still high so we we’re keeping these stations open and the offer running.”

The stations where the free gas is available are:

  • Butler Automotive – 261 Stanmore Road, Richmond
  • Mobil - 175 Wainoni Road, Wainoni
