The phone has been ringing off the hook as Canterbury residents rush to take up an offer of free flights and accommodation in Hawke’s Bay.

The offer from Hastings District and Napier City Councils was made, following the devastating earthquake which left Canterbury residents shell shocked and looking for some respite from the constant aftershocks.

147 registrations have been received, from people who want to take their family away from the devastation and have some time out, while they put their lives back in order.

Hastings Mayor Lawrence Yule says “most of those arriving at Hawke’s Bay Airport are families who want to stay three of four days, meaning around 400 individuals have already confirmed they will come to the region”.

“The number of people who have taken up the offer is pleasing and shows the scheme is serving the purpose it was designed for” Mr Yule says.

“Council staff have also been able to find accommodation for a number of people who have just packed up a few meager possessions and driven to Hawke’s Bay”.

The scheme will allow around 800 return flights from Christchurch and will be available until the councils funding is exhausted.

Canterbury residents can call 06 8344114 to discuss booking a flight and accommodation or register their details on the Hastings District Council website.
