Top secondary school athletes will compete for school pride, personal excellence and a spot in the North Island Secondary School Athletics Team at the Manawatu Inter Secondary School Athletics Championships on Saturday March 19 at Massey University’s athletic track.

Around 450 athletes from the Manawatu, Horowhenua, Tararua and Rangitikei regions are expected to attend the annual event, hosted by Queen Elizabeth College in conjunction with Sport Manawatu and the Palmerston North Athletics Club.

The best overall athlete will be awarded the Albert Pootjes Memorial Cup for outstanding individual performance.

Sport Manawatu secondary schools sports advisor, Ben Koch, says that this is the one of the biggest secondary school sporting events for the region and encourages family, friends and school students to come out and support the athletes.

“This is an opportunity to see our top year 9 to year 13 school athletes in action as they strive to be the best in the region at their chosen discipline,” he says.

“I wish them all the best of luck”.

The North Island Secondary School Athletics Championships will be held on the April 2 and 3 2011 at the Porritt Stadium in Hamilton.
