HAWKE'S BAY

There is a tsunami marine threat to New Zealand from the 8.9 earthquake that occurred Near East Coast of Honshu, Japan at 1846NZDT on 11 March 2011.

The Hawke’s Bay CDEM Group has received a tsunami marine threat for New Zealand. It is not expected to cause any significant waves along Hawkes Bay coastline, as it is on the lee side of New Zealand and sheltered from waves generated from near Japan.

Our estimate is for a possible wave run-up of up to 0.5 metres. Timing of this possibility is 0815 (NZDT) on Saturday March 12 as advised by Ministry of Civil Defence and Emergency Management. Note there can be some variability in arrival time and it could be earlier or later by about 1 hour. Low tide of at 05.41 and high tide is at 11.51 NZDT.

People in coastal areas should:

1. Stay off beaches

2. Stay out of the water (sea, rivers and estuaries, including boating activities)

3. Do not go sightseeing

4. Share this information with family, neighbours and friends

5. Listen to the radio and/or TV for updates

6. Follow instructions of your local Civil Defence authorities.

Napier Civil Defence is monitoring the situation and will advise of further updates as soon as possible.
