From 21 September the future of Franklin District Council will be in the hands of the voters. From this date voting documents for the 2007 Triennial Elections will be delivered to all registered electors in Franklin. People then have until midday Saturday October 13 to make their choices.

“Local Body elections typically have a low voter turn out which is baffling when you consider the importance of local government decisions for the local community,” says Pam Hovelle, Franklin District Council’s Electoral Officer.

But the past doesn’t have to dictate the future and Council is urging people to have their say through the easy postal voting system.

Even those who have not got around to enrolling can still do so. If you are not on the Electoral roll you can enrol up until 12 October 2007 and cast a special vote. To do this you need to collect an Enrolment pack from any District Council Office, New Zealand Post Shop or contact the Electoral Enrolment Centre on 0800 36 76 56. Your completed enrolment form must be returned to the Electoral Enrolment Centre by 12 October 2007 to ensure that you are able to cast a Special Vote. Special Voting forms can be obtained by making an application to Franklin District Council Electoral Office 82 Manukau Road Pukekohe, or by phoning 09 2371 394 or 09 2371 390.

To ensure you make an informed decision on who to vote for, candidate profiles will be sent out with voting papers. These profiles will also be on Councils website, www.franklin.govt.nz  from 21 September. On Election day results will be posted on the Franklin District Council website as soon as they are available after 12 noon.

For any further information on the elections, electors can contact the Franklin District Council Electoral Officer, Pam Hovelle, on (09) 2371394; or Irene Chamberlain, Deputy Electoral Officer, on (09) 2371390; or by visiting the Electoral Office at 82 Manukau Road Pukekohe.
