The Southland District Council has approved a Draft Active Land Transport Plan as areference document for the advancement of walking and cycling within the District.

The draft plan will be incorporated into Environment Southland’s Active Transport Strategy that will be released for public consultation when completed.

Roading Engineer Rochelle Leach said that the plan promotes walking and cycling within the Southland region. In 2002 Government released the New Zealand Transport Strategy.

The vision of the document is that by “2010 New Zealand will have an affordable, integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable transport system”.

The strategy recognises getting themost of all modes of transport and increasing walking and cycling is a major component of the strategy.

The strategy focuses on existing and future projects for pedestrians and cyclists, but also considers the needs of others that may use these facilities.

Rochelle Leach said that once the Southland wide plan has been available for public consultation it will be reviewed and adopted by the Regional Land Transport Committee
