Taupō District Council have granted a new 10 year lease to the Taupō Tennis Club to continue at its current location on the Tongariro North Domain.

The Taupō Tennis Club has been located on the northern tip of the Tongariro Domain since 1994, and following the expiry of its lease on 30 September 2008 the club has been operating on a month by month basis.

Representatives of the club had approached Council asking for a renewal of their lease for at least a ten year period, but were previously denied due to the Reserve Management Plan for the Domain requiring that the club be relocated elsewhere.

Following the outcome of the Commercial and Industrial Structure Plan (CISP) in August 2010 Council decided to amend the Tongariro Domain Reserve Management Plan [2005] to enable the granting of a new lease to the club subject to public consultation. Mayor Rick Cooper noted that public comment was invited but as there were no submissions it was therefore a fairly simple decision to grant the lease.

Deputy Mayor Mike Downard was delighted with the decision saying it was a long time coming. “I wish them all the best with the future; they can finally start resealing some of their courts.”

Councillor Barry Hickling was also glad to see the club finally receive some security. “It’s been a long drawn out process, and I know they have been quite uncertain for some time now, but we got there in the end.”
