HASTINGS

The road to the coastal community of Waimarama remains closed to general traffic and will remain closed overnight.

The bridge into Waimarama township is damaged and currently impassable and a temporary bridge is currently being investigated.

The water supply to Waimarama has been depleted due to the main supply being damaged at the bridge. Residents are asked to collect rainwater in clean containers. All water should be boiled and conserved.

Two residents were evacuated from Waimarama earlier today by the rescue helicopter- one was a female in advanced labour and the other a 71 year old male requiring dialysis treatment.

The helicopter also undertook a visual assessment of the Waimarama community and determined there were no imminent issues.

Ocean Beach currently has nine residents still in their homes and there are no imminent threats. The road to Ocean Beach remains closed.

Checkpoints will be in place on the Waimarama Road in the vicinity of Maraetotara Road controlling access to the two beaches.

In Haumoana Te Awanga and Clifton some surface flooding has receded and roading checks are underway. Once again a checkpoint is in place at the Clifton end near the Maraetotara Stream. All people requiring assistance have been evacuated and are either at the welfare centre at Haumoana School or staying with friends and family.

People requiring assistance or overnight accommodation should report to the welfare centre at Haumoana School. Our welfare team is working hard to meet the immediate needs of residents.

People in these communities are advised to avoid driving wherever possible and stay at home where they are safe. If driving is absolutely necessary we ask people to exercise extreme caution They should also stay away from the coastline and any rivers or streams.

Residents in the affected areas are reminded that floodwater can be polluted and should be treated with caution.

Personal hygiene, especially hand washing is very important to prevent the spread of disease.

Residents who still require emergency assistance should call 111 or the Hastings District Council (06) 8715000.
